Set within a lush coastal setting, this project transforms a modest, older dwelling into a calm and materially rich architectural home. Rather than a cosmetic renovation, it reimagines the spatial experience while retaining elements of the original structure. Once compartmentalised and inward-looking, the house is now opened to light, landscape, and a more contemporary way of living — a deliberate departure from the white on white coastal aesthetic.

Inside, the rich colours give way to balance. Bluestone tiles bring durability, natural texture and weight, while warm timber joinery and softer coloured elements introduce warmth and personality. Muted blues, greens and warmer tones appear sparingly but with confidence, creating character within a considered palette. The pairing of polished chrome fixtures with coloured fittings offers something unexpected and playful yet refined.

Externally, a sculptural steel-framed carport establishes a confident architectural identity and new street presence. Realised by Lonesome Studio and J&E Projects, both based in and around Byron Bay, the result is a cohesive, highly liveable home that celebrates creativity, material clarity, and precise construction. Kell, principal designer at Lonesome Studio & Humphreys, describes the project as “The Antipode of Beige”.
